Forgotten

"Dammit! I just don't understand this!" Jessie screamed as she backed away from the locked door, "what's wrong with everyone?!"

Coughing behind her Alex lay on the floor his eyes closed, "I told you the door was locked."

James frowned as he sat on a chair in the corner, his dark brown eyes downcast, "so we are stuck here."

"For now," replied Alex, as he ran a hand over his forehead, "although we may be able to get up to the ceiling through the air ducts, "or at least somewhere where we can get to the roof. Maybe an elevator or a fire escape."

"Doesn't this room have a fire escape?" Jessie asked, her short brown hair disheveled and matted.

"Nope. Next room is, not to sure what it's like over there."

"So how do we get there?" James asked.

Alex merely pointed up at the ventilation duct directly above him.

"I should be able to fit," Jessie said as she cast her green eyes upwards.

"Doesn't help us none," Alex replied caustically.

"Besides they might be in the ducts or in the next rooms," James said as he stood. His six foot fram towering over Jessie by about a foot.

"The rooms can't all be open," Jessie replied angrily, "I mean this one was locked."

"That's because I was in here," Alex shot back, "now do you mind I have a headache."

"How many do you think are on this floor James?"

"Can't be too many Jess," James said as he looked through the peephole, "I think there's maybe five."

"That you can see," Alex chimed in.

"Shut up Alex!" Jessie screeched at Alex.

"Jess, quiet," James hissed.

The room fell silent for a moment, and than the banging started, "Jesus no," James whispered as he backed away from the door, "there's so many out there."

Alex rose and began pushing a dresser infront of the door, "great. Now they know we're here."

Jessie backed up until her back hit the window, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

As Alex and James finished barricading the door Jessie turned and looked out the window, "they're all over down there. What is going on out there."

James joined her and slid an arm around Jess, "we'll get out of this I know we will."

As Alex stood back, the banging continued, how far is the fire escape from this window? Maybe we can jump it."

"It doesn't look to far," James said as he peeked his head out of the window.

"Are there any of those things on it?"

"Not that I can see."

"Okay I'll go first than Jess than you"

"Alright, you okay with that Jess?"

"Yeah I'll be fine," Jess replied.

As Alex climbed out of the window he sidled out of view, a grunt followed by a louder grunt and the clang of metal could be heard from the room. As James looke dout he could see Alex scrambling over the railing, "you ok Alex?"

"Yeah just fine. Send Jess over."

"Okay Jess you can do this," James said as he helped her out the window, "hurry now."

Soon enough Jess was on the fireescape next to Alex, "come on James."

"Did I ever mention to you I was afraid of heights?" James said as he climbed out the window.

"You'll be ok man just don't look down," Alex responded reassuringly.

As James slid closer to teh fire escape the door crashing to the floor and the garbled moans of the things piling into the room could be heard. Three stories below a large group of them were amassing underneath James. As he jumped hands reached out of the window to grab him, but Alex's hand shot out and James crashed into teh side of the fire escape.

"It's ok buddy I got you," Alex said as James looked up and scrambled over the railing.

"Christ that was freaky," James said as he stared up at the sky.

"Yeah now we just gotta climb up five more stories and wait for some sort of rescue."

"Great," replied James, as he followed behind Jess.

As they reached the roof and scrambled over the side the Alex passed a peek over the edge, "well they're not coming up so I guess we'll be safe."

"But we don't have any food, what will we do?" Jess repliedsoftly.

"Well be rescued before than," was James' reply, "after all it can't be happening everywhere right?"

"Yeah." Alex replied, "just gotta wait for a helicopter or somethign to come and rescue us.

Jess sat down next to James and folded her hands in her lap, "I hope they come for us soon."

As James sat next to Jess he smiled and put an arm around her. Alex continued to stare down at the street below, "Jesus, I can't believe someone could turn into that."

"I know it doesn't seem pos-" James trailed off as the sound of a helicopter's rotors could be heard. The three were standign and waving their arms in an instant, but the craft passed right over their building.

"Hey stop! We're down here!" shouted Jess, "come back!"

"God damnit!" Alex shouted, as Jess fell into James' arms.

"Why didn't they stop James?"

"I don't know Jess. I don't know."

As they stood there watching the helicoptor fade from sight another sound was heard this one louder and faster, "it's a jet, Alex said as they saw a dark triangle pass over head."

An instant later, a bright flash of light blinded the three, and they felt themselves blown backwards as a wall of air and dust hit them.
